SCSD Receives Grant at Sequoia Healthcare District Ceremony

Last night, the San Carlos School District participated in the “Caring Community Awards Reception” as one of three dozen organizations that received grants from the Sequoia Healthcare District to support community health needs. The Sequoia Healthcare District provides grants to nonprofit organizations and governmental agencies concerned with the healthcare needs of the residents of the southern part of San Mateo County. Grants are made on a competitive basis, and the San Carlos School District was awarded a multi-year grant commitment.
Although the ceremony last night was to recognize the first $100,000 grant that SCSD received for a school nurse and health educator (see this press release from April), the San Carlos School District also received notice last week that it was awarded an additional $340,000 to fund a wellness coordinator/health educator, counselors, physical education, and more. Here is the press release from last week announcing the additional $340,000 grant to SCSD.
This grant will span three years totaling $1.32 million ($440,000 a year for three years). It will go a long way to help the District provide more health-related services and also provide some relief to our current budget crisis. Although the remaining grant wasn’t official until last week, the budget discussions over the last month included the assumption that we would indeed receive some portion of this grant, and therefore will be included in the Superintendent’s final budget adoption recommendations to be voted on by the board later this week.
The school district extends its sincere thanks to the Sequoia Healthcare District. They are a great partner to our local schools!
